Why I Don't Use Lash Growth Serums as a Dermatologist

I don’t use lash growth serums. That’s because many of them contain a specific ingredient that can have undesirable side effects such as eye dropping, darkening of the eyelid area (dark circles), and more. Watch this video to find out why I don’t use lash growth serums anymore.

What do you think about Sweed Beauty lash serum? is it okay?

  2. @robynb5434 on March 6, 2025 at 3:07 pm

I’m wondering about Scorolash. Do you know if it has the prostaglandin? It doesn’t look like it but not familiar with some of these ingredients.
(Aqua, Hyaluronate, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Pentylene Glycol, Panax Ginseng Extract, Swertia Japonica Extract, Panthenol,
Pumpkin Seed Extract, Acorus Calamus Root Extract, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Oligopeptide-10, Tocopherol.)

Everything on my body is sensitive to anything and everything anyways. I still thought id try the ordinary eyelash
Serum and for the first time in my whoollleeeee life, i suddenly had two of the worst cysts ever within a month apart. My whole eye/cheek was swollen filled with pus. Awful!

i mean this with no disrespect but if i had lashes like yours i wouldn’t use lash serums either lol

I’ve been using Bimatoprost, generic for Latisse, for years. I’m not very diligent with it, probably 3-4 times a week but it noticeably increases my eyelash length, thickness. I’ve never had any of these issues. It’s disturbing to think you would not write a script for me for this, as even informed of this risk, I’d still like to use Latisse. These are my risks. I think providers forget that their role, at least in part, is to support a patient’s informed choices, not their own.

Thanks for this. Castor oil did nothing for me.

  8. @MajaAngel92 on March 6, 2025 at 3:13 pm

Omg! I’ve wondered why my eyelid on my left eye was getting "bigger" than my other side…. guess I need to stop using my lash serum! 😢

I was wondering if there is a colorless transparent mascara that you know in the market for us that want to be as natural as possible?

  13. @_Anna_Nass_ on March 6, 2025 at 3:19 pm

What if we use it just for eyebrows? I already have pretty long lashes but my eyebrows suck.

  14. @performanceart2957 on March 6, 2025 at 3:19 pm

Revive 7 is a safe one, I don’t think they have changed their ingredients. It’s a Canadian brand.

I’ve just found your channel and am appreciating all that you do. I am 74 and lost my lashes 3 years ago to chemo, but got them back with one of the products you don’t recommend, however I stopped using it 6 weeks ago and started on another, Obagi, which has dehydrolatanoprost in its ingredients. Is this the same as the latanoprost? You have me worried since I have deep set eyes and dark circles. I hope you’ll see this and respond!

    Where about implant lashes

  18. @annakoczon6179 on March 6, 2025 at 3:27 pm

What about using a lash growth serum on your brows instead?

  19. @rissaxo9529 on March 6, 2025 at 3:30 pm

I been using this vegan organic serum from Amazon and I literally have no bottom lashes top is full. Has my bottom growing very nicely for some reason it’s not available anymore I’m trying a new one called ruminae. I think serums rock just make sure your not using something harmful❤

  20. @AsdfffchGcycvy-sv5pv on March 6, 2025 at 3:35 pm

    Why they are not band???

  21. @LeneAcutt on March 6, 2025 at 3:36 pm

Apparently, according to a Dr it is not reversible. Once the eye becomes drooping from the prostaglandin use.

  22. @rebeccacamp8331 on March 6, 2025 at 3:39 pm

Please do a video on what you do use on your lashes!

  23. @kvr0n248 on March 6, 2025 at 3:40 pm

If we use this ingredient on eyebrows will it also have negative side-effects or will it be okay?

  24. @dmmt2932 on March 6, 2025 at 3:40 pm

Is it safe to use on eyebrows?

  28. @amandawood3817 on March 6, 2025 at 3:44 pm

THANK YOU, THANK YOU SOOOO very much! I’ve been using Latisse on my eyelashes and I’ve noticed that my eyelids are starting to droop, I do get Botox- brow lift and I thought the drooping of my eyelids was related to that but NOW I know what the cause is and I will stop using Latisse. Also, I had the eyelid surgery done about 5 years ago and I highly recommend it!! Totally transformed my eyes & helps me look younger. Hooded eyes -strong genetic factor in my family. Thanks again Dr Ellis! I just love your videos and content ❤

"What a mouth full" i thought about your teeth. Nice healthy smile

  30. @Chasee445 on March 6, 2025 at 3:45 pm

Thank you for informing us about this risk. I can’t believe the irresponsibly of my dermatologist is not telling about this after prescribing long-term use of latisse to me. I’m happy to hear that stopping will reverse risk.

  31. @belebele1982 on March 6, 2025 at 3:48 pm

Are those side effects from people who use it to treat glaucoma? I think how much people use plays a big part on the side effects. When you use it for eye lash grow you can use only one drop to cover both eyes. Once your eyelashes grow to its max you only have to use it 2-3 times per week. I can see people thinking that more might be better. Latisse is not going to give you eyelashes you don’t have to begin with – keep that in mind.
I have used latisse for almost 10 yrs and I haven’t had any undesirable side effect -I take breaks here and there tho. I don’t have blue eyes if I had blue or green eyes I’d probably never tried it.
My eyelashes were ridiculously long specifically the first 6 years (I’m much older now) I didn’t have to wear mascara…Once I was having a heart to heart conversation with my daughter and we both were crying and then suddenly she said “mom your eyelashes are fu@$ long!!!” Also my eyelashes would brush my sunglasses lenses and it was annoying so I cut down on using it. Any chemical we use has potential for side effects of course and everyone is different. I’m glad I’ve been able to continue using it. If you are looking for a good mascara try Chanel Le volume the regular kind don’t get the weatherproof. Great mascara. Worth every penny!

  32. @DrEnglander1999 on March 6, 2025 at 3:48 pm

I have so many questions! 1/ What is the likelihood of someone developing the side effect you describe? Is it 1 in 10? 1 in 100? 1 in 1000? 2/ is this condition permanent, or does it reverse when you stop using the product? 3/ Is the ingredient that causes this problem banned in other territories in the world? (ie is this a USA problem because the problematic ingredient has been banned in the EU and so wouldn’t be found in products sold there, for instance?)

  33. @ilwln on March 6, 2025 at 3:48 pm

castor oil help bc helped me a lot tho I already have thick lashes and eyebrows

  34. @abigailoleary7894 on March 6, 2025 at 3:49 pm

Latisse turned my eyelids purple, so I switched to Revitalash with success. But now I know why my green eyes have turned brown over the past few years. I wish I had known this possible side effect. I never would have used it! I am stopping and hoping that my green eyes return. 🤞

  35. @TechieSewing on March 6, 2025 at 3:51 pm

Those are serious side effects. Why are they even approved to be sold, I wonder?

  36. @cheekymonkeygirl3378 on March 6, 2025 at 3:51 pm

Why do I love your personality and channel so much? 😈♥️

  37. @lomeltz on March 6, 2025 at 3:54 pm

is this true about brow serum, too?

  38. @mianshahmirali1607 on March 6, 2025 at 3:56 pm

Hello, thanks for the amazing video. Are prostaglandins safe for eyebrows? Or how long can it be used on eyebrows without side effects?

  39. @nikiabutler1791 on March 6, 2025 at 3:56 pm

Can you share serums that don’t have these ingredients and that actually work? Also can you use the serums with the ingredient and stop like after a month and then start again? Can you do it in smaller doses?

  40. @cin337 on March 6, 2025 at 3:56 pm

I use to just put vaseline on lash tips before going to bed.

  41. @DebbieLucas-xp2rr on March 6, 2025 at 3:56 pm

I stopped using the generic ‘Bimatoprost’. My optometrist wrote me the RX a few years ago. I saw another dr on YouTube saying you could lose the fat on the lid as well, but when my optometrist found out why I stopped, he said ‘that is not true, if it were they would have taken these off the market". As we know you can”t trust the FDA when money is involved with the product! I have a stack of the RX in my bathroom linen closet. Now what do I do???

  42. @is2837 on March 6, 2025 at 3:57 pm

Thanks for the info! I will use it and stop if I see much changes. 🙂 I’m glad it can be reversible.,

  43. @EadsB7002 on March 6, 2025 at 3:59 pm

i stopped using growth serums for this exact reason about 2 years ago! i was losing a lot of facial volume about that time, and yes also that fat pad below my eyes started sagging too…just not a risk for making it worse that i was willing to take. So far collegen supplementation and castor oil has helped!

  44. @CroisMoi on March 6, 2025 at 3:59 pm

Dr. Ellis, your content is gold. I used a lash serum when they first came out, and I developed dark circles around my eyes, and I also had a gelatinous coating on the eyeball. Somehow these growth factors caused an overgrowth of my cornea. I stopped using when I realized it. But to this day I have under eye circles. I wonder once the fat is removed and shrunken, how it can really be restored? Thank you.

  45. @kellycurry1070 on March 6, 2025 at 4:02 pm

Thank you for the information. We can even see on you’re suffering from orbital fatigue loss.

  46. @felicitycarly4997 on March 6, 2025 at 4:02 pm

Hello doc, Thanks for the video. Are lash serums containing this substance better/ safer to use on EYEBROWS? Thanks in advance!

  47. @jessicatesar on March 6, 2025 at 4:03 pm

Doesn’t give any tips to grow them. That would be a nice thing to add for the next video.

  48. @Panstance on March 6, 2025 at 4:03 pm

It’s true. I was using this eyelash serum and while my lashes grew longer and thicker I also developed dark eye circles. So that’s the trade off for luscious lashes 😂

  49. @juliek2347 on March 6, 2025 at 4:04 pm

I’ve been using waterproof mascara for a year and it ruined my eyelashes so I just bought Diablo eyelash serum that is advertised not to use prostaglandin. I checked the ingredients with ChatGPT but would love to hear your comment.

Thank you so much! This was the information I needed and very well explained.
